This sculptural work is a contemporary interpretation of the sandstone cliff faces and fractured rock formations that surround the coastal landscape of Sydney’s Northern Beaches, where I live and work. While abstract in form, the sculpture retains the quiet monumentality and grounded presence of a weathered cliff — a form shaped over time through erosion and geological movement. Living high on a hill inland from the ocean, I have become deeply aware of the way light moves across the landscape, particularly during the transitional moments of dawn and dusk. I am especially drawn to the stillness before sunrise, when the land remains almost entirely dark before gradually becoming illuminated by a warm orange morning light. This fleeting division between shadow and illumination has become a central visual and emotional reference within my work. The surfaces are left unglazed to preserve an earthy, raw, and tactile quality reminiscent of stone. Fired using a saggar reduction process, the sculpture develops smoky tones and orange gradients that echo the movement of natural light across the terrain. At its core, the work reflects on life’s inherent polarities — the idea that light and darkness, balance and rupture, movement and stillness are inseparable and mutually defining. Through its contemplative and grounded presence, the sculpture invites viewers to reflect on time, impermanence, and our relationship to place and transformation.
